
As a Woburn resident who lives close to Horn Pond, I love walking dogs at Horn Pond. Yes, I am biased as it is so close to my home. However, it really is an amazing place to walk your dog. I walk there daily with my dogs and my dog walking clients of Muddy Paws. Truthfully, I sometimes feel Horn Pond is my own personal place because I am there so often walking dogs. For this reason, I find it a great place to unwind and get some exercise. And it is a pond which is pretty to view while walking dogs. However, can dogs swim at Horn Pond? Read on to find out.
Horn Pond
Horn Pond is located in Woburn, Massachusetts. However, parts of the 102-acre area covers Winchester, Massachusetts as well. It is fed by several brooks that flow to the Aberjona River and the Mystic Lakes. Eventually reaches the Mystic River and the Atlantic Ocean. It’s impressive that a small pond reaches the Atlantic Ocean over 10 miles away!
Walking around the pond itself is 2 miles from start to finish. However, you can walk along other trails within the acreage to extend your walk.
Dog Walking At Horn Pond

Dog walking at Horn Pond is great. Paved pathways run parallel to the pond. If you prefer off-the-beaten-paths, those are there as well. Along the trails, you can find wildlife such as ducks, swans, turtles, birds, fox, herons, deer, and even coyotes.
The quiet calm and secluded areas allow you to connect with nature. It seems far from the hustle and bustle, however, you are only minutes away. Walking dogs at Horn Pond is a great escape. Dogs and humans alike are able to leave the stress of the city behind while exercising in nature.
Unfortunately, dogs are not allowed to swim in Horn Pond. However, a quick sip of water to re-hydrate themselves on a hot day shouldn’t be a problem. Just make sure not to allow them to be off leash in or out of the water. Further, off leash walks are prohibited and frowned upon. Further, the dog officer makes frequent trips to the pond to make sure everyone is walking their dogs on leash.

Horn Pond Mountain

The mountain at Horn Pond referred to as Horn Pond Mountain or Mt. Towanda is located towards the Woburn Country Club Golf Course. Back in 1960s, you could ski down this mountain. It seems incredible that there used to be a ski slope in Woburn, MA! The ski slope is no longer there, but there is a paved path that leads to the top of the mountain. If you climb the steep, but paved walkway, you will be awarded with a magnificent view of the Boston skyline.
There is a park bench at the top. Take a seat to sit, catch your breath, and soak in the scenery up there. It really is a gorgeous site and you feel like you are sitting on top of the world.
Exercise Stations
There are a variety of exercise stations scattered along the paved walkways at Horn Pond. Stations include parallel bars, pull up bars that have varying heights for all athletic abilities and sizes, chain ropes to climb, and others that are sure to keep you fit – if you decide to use them regularly.
The exercise stations are great for kids and adults alike. The varying sizes provide exercise for little and bigger people. Therefore, the exercise stations provide a great way to exercise in addition to walking, biking, running, or just exploring!
Trails At Horn Pond
As previously mentioned, there are a variety of trails within Horn Pond that are great for dog walking. Some of the trails are paved which is wonderful for strollers or people who need a smooth surface for balance purposes.
Additionally, there are a variety of dirt paths so you can explore deeper into the woods while you walk your dog. Think of all the trees your dog can mark during their walk! While walking your dog on the trails at Horn Pond, you are bound to see turtles basking in the sun and the Blue Heron who frequents Horn Pond. In fact, you can find horses walking through the trails as well.
Walking at Horn Pond never disappoints. Further, each season brings about a change in landscape; untouched snowy trees, flowing bushes, lush plants and trees, and the gorgeous fall colored leaves. Therefore, there is truly is something for everyone at Horn Pond. I highly recommend taking your dog to walk there.

Unfortunately, dogs cannot swim in Horn Pond. It is extremely unfortunate actually as there aren’t many places for dogs to swim. The water at the pond is drinking water. Therefore, no swimming allowed for humans or canines.
If you are looking for your dog to swim near Woburn, MA is Cat Rock Park. Cat Rock is located in Weston, MA and is a great place to walk your dog in wooded trails. There is a lake at Cat Rock. Dogs ARE allowed to swim in it! Cat Rock is one of the few places where dogs can swim. And, the water is clean!
